Give both contractors the same starting brief

Describe the area, existing surface, intended vehicle use and the outcome you want. Photograph access, visible defects, levels and places where water collects. Ask which measurements and conditions need an assessment before a fixed proposal is appropriate.

The brief does not diagnose a crack or specify structural work. Record the contractor’s assessment, proposed solution and assumptions. Repair, partial replacement and full replacement are different scopes, so compare proposals for the same agreed approach.

Check what happens before the pour

Ask who removes the existing surface, disposes of material and prepares the ground. Request the proposed base work, concrete specification and any reinforcement in writing. Record exclusions and provisional allowances rather than treating them as included.

NRMCA’s Concrete In Practice resources cover joints, curing and related concrete topics. They are useful questions to discuss with a contractor; this tool does not prescribe a universal thickness, reinforcement layout or return-to-use period.

Agree how scope changes are handled

Ask how unexpected existing conditions will be documented, priced and approved before additional work proceeds. Compare the payment stages and what completion means in each proposal. A cheaper total with an unresolved preparation allowance is not directly comparable with a fixed, documented scope.

For the driveway project, confirm the responsible jurisdiction and any required permissions for your property. Share the same scope with the contractors you contact.

Ask for preparation evidence and handover

Request photographs of the relevant preparation stages, product or specification records and the agreed completion documents. Ask for curing, access and return-to-use instructions applicable to the actual installation. Keep the warranty issuer, coverage and conditions clear.

The comparison leaves every unfilled field unknown and lists follow-up questions. Your entries stay in the page. Use it with the existing concrete checklist and speak directly with the contractors about the same project.
